Power of the Cloud

Cloud computing, or the cloud, is relatively new technology to many companies today. However, the terminology of the cloud has been around for many decades. Today, the cloud connects numerous devices together and enables on-demand requests for information and processing. Without the cloud, individuals and businesses are required to access data and information manually.

As data sizes and data consumption continue to increase for all types of industries, the capacity limits of hard-drives are challenged. A company is left with the choice of purchasing larger quantities or higher capacities for their storage, or choosing to utilise the cloud for their data storage and computing needs.

History of the Cloud

The cloud, or cloud computing, dates as far back as 1970 with large companies like IBM and DEC. In the earliest years, cloud computing was originally referred to as time-sharing through the use of “virtual machines.”

A couple of decades later in 1990, telecommunication companies began to offer virtual private network (VPN) services at a fraction of the cost. These companies were able to work efficiently by balancing server utilisation via switching network traffic in order to control network bandwidth.

In recent years, cloud computing has become more prevalent in both consumer and business markets. An emphasis has been placed on providing quality of service guarantees to the infrastructures in order to provide a real-time environment for cloud computing.

Benefits of the Cloud

As cloud computing becomes modernised, its effectiveness to both consumers and businesses has increased. Companies are finding new ways to utilise cloud computing in order to enhance their business while saving costs.

Improved Accessibility
Businesses can access their data anytime and anywhere there is internet connection. You no longer need to have the physical hard-drive storage in the office in order to access an important file or secure data.

Stronger Security
As cloud computing companies develop their software and the technology of the cloud, security of your information and data continues to increase. As these advancements in technology come into play, you will enjoy immediate benefits of tighter security.

Improved Reliability
Working with data and information within the company, you run the risk of data loss during the most critical moments in your business. If you experience a power outage or hard-drive failure, your data could instantly be wiped out. With the cloud, your information is always available and is always backed up, even during company outages and hardware failure.
